Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ADV) – Africa’s legendary statesman and leader, Ethiopia’s Haile Selassie will be honoured by his peers on 10 February with his statue at the AU premises, sources said.
The display of Emperor Selassie’s statue will coincide with the opening session of this year’s African Union Summit of heads of state and government.
More precisely the stature will be erected in his honour for his role in the evolution of Africa’s development agenda, a statement on the pan African body’s website reads.
Kwesi Quartey, said, “the commemorative statue of Emperor Haile Selassie is an important recognition of the Emperor’s contribution to Africa’s liberation and unity leading up to the founding of the Organization of African Unity in 1963.
The Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, King of Kings of Ethiopia, Elect of God was the last emperor of the Solomonic Dynasty that ruled Ethiopia until 12 September 1974 when he was deposed at the age of 82.
The reign of one of the most popular leaders of the 19th century was cut short the Soviet-backed Derg military regime, formally known as the Provisional Military Government of Socialist Ethiopia, while ruled till 1991, the statement on the AU website continued.
